Tomato dhal


Tomato dhal


Moong dhal         - 1/4 cup
Tomato                -  3 finely chopped
onion                   - 1/2finely chopped
garlic  cloves       - 2
curry leaves         -few
hing                     -pinch
mustard seeds      -1/4 tsp
urad dhal             -1/4 tsp
cumin seeds        -1/4 tsp
green chillies       -4-5
cilantro                -to garnish
butter                   -1tsp
turmeric               -pinch
salt                       -to taste


  • In a pressure cooker cook moong dhal with little hing and water for upto 2 whistles.
  • In a kadai heat butter and allow mustard seed to splutter.

  • Temper with urad dhal, cumin seeds, curry leaves, chopped garlic, green chillies and turmeric

  • Add the chopped onions and fry until transparent.

  • Follow it with tomatoes ,desired salt and cook until mushy.

  • Add the cooked dhal (and 1/4 cup of water if needed) and cook for 5 minutes.

  • Serve with Rice/chapathi
