plantain flower usili/vazhaipoo usili


Plantain flower/vazhaipoo     - 1 medium sized
onion                                      - 1/2 finely chopped
cumin seeds                            -  1/4 tsp
curry leaves                            - few
oil                                            - 1tbsp
salt                                          - to taste
turmeric                                   -pinch

For grinding:

toor dal  (or) channa dal      -2/3 cup
hing                                      -1/4 tsp
red chillies                            -6-8
Fennel seeds                         -1/2tsp
salt                                        - little


  • Clean the plantain flower peel and cut into pieces.

  • Pressure cook for a whistle adding water, turmeric and salt.

  • Soak toordal  (or) channa dal in water for at least 1 hour.
  • Drain the water and grind chana dhal along with remaining ingredients for grinding into a coarse paste.

  • Spread on a plate and microwave for 1minute and 30 seconds or you could steam in idli tawa too.

  • Once cooled down again grind .

  • In a pan heat oil and allow cumin seeds to splutter and add curry  leaves.

  • Add onions and fry until transparent.
  • Add the cooked plantain flower/vazhaipoo and mix well.

  • Add the ground  dhal .

  • Cover with the lid and cook for 5 minutes.

  • Serve as a side dish with Rice .
