Okra /vendakkai puttu 

Okra puttu is a south indian side dish made with okra and lentils.The aroma of fennel seeds just make it more flavorful along side Rice over Sambar/Rasam

Ingredients:

Okra / vendakkai        -200g
Fennel seeds               - 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves               - few
Onion                          -1/4 cup finely chopped
Green chili                  -1
Salt                              - to taste
Oil                               -2-3 tsp

To grind

Chana dhal/Bengal gram-1/4 cup
Curry leaves                    -few
Salt                                  - to taste
Chili powder                   -1/2 -3/4tsp
Cumin powder                -1/4 tsp
Turmeric                         -pinch

Preparation time:30 min
Cooking Time     :20 min
Method:

  • Soak chana dhal in waterfor at least 30 minutes.
  • Chop okra into fine semi circles
  • Drain the water thoroughly and grind chana dhal with the remaining ingredients to grind into a neither too coarse nor too soft paste.


  • After that add water to it to make a looser consistency.

  • In a pan heat oil and temper with fennel seeds,green chili and curry leaves.

  • Fry onion until it turns nice transluscent.

  • Add the chopped okra/vendakkai  and fry until it starts becoming sticky to each other.

  • Then add the ground paste and keep stirring continuously.
                                       
                                       
                                      

  • Cook until the okra is well done and become into seperate pieces not sticking to each other.

  • Serve as a side with Rice and Sambar/Rasam
