Chicken  varuval/Chicken fry


onion                   -1 cup sliced
tomato                 -1 cup finely chopped
coriander powder-1 tsp
pepper powder    -1/2 tsp
salt                       -to taste
cashews               -few
oil                        - 1 -2 tbsp

For marinating:

chicken               -1/2 kg
turmeric              -1/4 tsp
chilli powder      -1 tsp
salt                     -to taste
lemon juice       -1/2 tbsp.

For roasting and grinding:

coriander seeds   -1 tbsp
red chillies          -2
shredded coconut-2 tbsp
garlic cloves        -5
ginger                  -1/2 inch
cinnamon            -1
cloves                  -2
cardamom            -1
curry leaves         -few
oil                        - 1 tsp


  • In a bowl marinade chicken with marinading ingredients given for marination for atleast 30 minutes.

  • In a pan heat oil and roast the ingredients given for roasting and grinding in a order as in pic

  • Allow it to cool off and grind it into a smooth paste.

  • In a pan heat oil and temper with mustard seeds, cumin seeds and fennel seeds.

  • Add the sliced onions and cashews and fry until golden.

  • Add the tomatoes and cook until mushy.

  • Add the coriander powder and desired salt.

  • Cook until mixed well and add the ground paste.

  • Cook for 3 minutes and add the marinated chicken.

  • Keep cooking mixing now and then until the chicken is well done and masala dries completely.

  • Garnish with cilantro.

  • Serve as a side with Rice
