vatha kuzhambu


onion                                             -   1/2 chopped
sambar powder                              - 2 tbsp
garlic cloves                                  - 6-9
tamarind                                        -  1 lemon size ball           
vathal (any dried vegetable )        -   1-2 tbsp
Mavathal                                       -  4
Sesame oil                                     -3 tbsp
mustard seeds                                - 1/4 tsp
fenugtreek seeds                            - 1/4 tsp
cumin seeds                                   -  1/4 tsp
curry leaves                                   -  few
salt                                                 - to taste


  • In a kadai heat oil and fry the vathal well and keep it aside
  • Again in same oil fry the garlic cloves until raw flavour goes off and keep it aside
  • Again in same oil temper with mustard seeds,cumin seeds,fenugreek seeds and curry leaves
  • Add onion and fry till it turns transparent
  • Add the sambar powder and cook until the msala gets cooked(do not burn the masala)

  • Add the fried vathal and garlic to it.
  • Pour the tamarind pulp water extracted out of lemon sized  tamarind ball and add salt.(add little salt as you can check at the final stage if u need more)

  • Once it starts boiling add the ma vathal
  • Cook until the oil oozes out

  • Serve with Rice and papad
