Ridge gourd milk kootu/Peerkangai paal kootu

Ridge gourd is added  to the  regular south indian tempering and cooked in milk to make a mild flavored delicious peerkangai paal kootu.


Ridge gourd peeled and cut into cubes    - 350 g
milk                                                          - 11/2 cup
mustard seeds                                           -  1/4 tsp
urad dhal                                                   - 1/4 tsp
channa dhal                                               -1/4 tsp
cumin seeds                                              - 1/4 tsp
red chillies                                                - 2
green chillies                                            - 2
curry leaves                                               - few
coriander powder                                      - 2 tsp
cilantro                                                      - to garnish
onion                                                         - 1 cup finely chopped

Preparation time:10 min
Cooking time     :20 min


  • In a kadai heat oil and temper with mustard seeds,urad dhal,cumin seeds,channa dhal,red chillies,green chillies and curry leaves.
  • Now add the chopped onion ,salt and coriander powderand fry until transparent.

  • Add the milk and chopped ridge gourd it.

  • Cook for 10 minutes or untilt he ridge gourd is done.
  • Garnish with cilantro .

  • Serve with Rice or chapathi
