Karaikudi  chicken gravy

Karaikudi is a small place in Tamilnadu .But Karaikudi cuisine is one among the famous cuisine in Tamil nadu and this karaikudi chicken gravy is very unique flavored and versatile dish that goes well with any accompaniment Rice/Idli/Dosa/Chapathi/paratha


Chicken              -1/2 kg
yogurt                 -1 tbsp
turmeric powder  -1/4 tsp

Chilli powder       -1tsp
Coriander powder-1 1/2 tbsp
oil                         - 2 tbsp
salt                        - to taste

For Grinding: table 1

Ginger                  -1 inch
Garlic                   -4
Small onion          -10 to 15
Tomato                 -1 to 1 1/2 nos
Pepper corn          -1 tsp
Cumin seeds         -1 tsp
Fennel seeds         -1 tsp
Cinnamon stick     -1 inch
Mint leaves          -few


For Grinding:table2

Coconut                -1/3 to2/3 cup shredded
Cashew nuts         -4
 Preparation time:10 minutes
Cooking time        :25 minutes


  • In a bowl marinade chicken with yogurt,salt and turmeric.
  • In a mixer blend the ingredients given in table 1 for grinding into a smooth paste.
  • Heat 2 tbsp of oil in the cooker and add the ground paste  .

  •  cook until the masala looses its raw flavor and then add  chilli powder and coriander powder.

  • mix well and add marinated chicken half cup of water and salt.
  • Pressure cook upto 3 whistle.

  • Simultaneously grind the table 2 ingredients into smooth paste adding little water.
  • After the pressure goes off open the cooker and add the ground paste

  • Cook for 5 more minutes.

  • Serve with Rice/chapathi/paratha/Idli/dosa
