Cheppankizhangu Masala


Cheppankizhangu /tararoot      -3
onion                                        -1/2
tomato                                      -1 small
ginger ,garlic                             -1 tbsp chopped
chili powder                            -1/2 tsp
cumin powder            -1/2 tsp
coriander powder       -1 tbsp
mustard seeds             -1/4tsp
uradal                         -1/4tsp
cumin seeds               -1/4tsp
fennel seeds               - 1/4 tsp
curry leaves               -few
oil                              -3 tbsp
salt                             - to taste


  • Wash and boil the tara root/cheppankizhangu until it gets half cooked.
  • Peel the skin after its cool off and cut it into slices.
  • Sprinkle salt over to it and shallow fry in hot oil like in below picture.

  • In  a kadai heat oil and temper with mustard seeds,urad dhal ,cumin seeds,fennel seeds and curry leaves.
  • Add the crushed ginger &garlic  and fry until the raw smell goes off.
  • Fry onion until light golden

  • Add tomatoes to it and fry until becomes mushy and add little water.

  • Add chilli powder,coriander powder and cumin powder and desired salt and mix well.

  • Add the fried tararoot/cheppankizhangu and cook it until it is done.

  • Serve with Rice.
